Meet The Small Animals

They have all be bought because I have discovered them in pet shops on their own, in small cages or in poor condition.

Sadly the situation gets worse and worse each year in this country. The large organisations generally now suggest euthanasia in these cases which leaves small struggling sanctuaries to pick up these unwanted animals. I ask for donations because I am financially desperate now and I hate to have to turn animals away if there is nowhere else for them to go. Unfortunately I have found that I get NO SUPPORT. I also ask for a donation as I feel people should be made aware that the cost for their unwanted animal does not end when they give them up. I have been amazed and saddened however by how little people feel is a reasonable donation. Not because I am in this for the money but because it demonstrates how little they value their pet. Issaac the rabbit cost me £300 within a week of taking him in as he had to have major surgery and ongoing veterinary treatment. This is not the norm but food even for a small animal over their life span not to mention any other needs run into the £100’s. Please if in ANY doubt DO NOT take on ANY animal.

At present these consist of

Degus Degusa.jpg (19998 bytes) Tom, Richard, Harry- unfortunately out of the family of degus I rescued I now only have three males left. They are quite delicate animals and I do not know how old they are or how inter – bred they are. The vets also know nothing about them so that when they are ill they cannot treat them effectively and they tend to become ill and die very quickly. Really they are not suitable to be kept as pets and they were brought to this country to be experimented on to find out about diabetes. They became popular as pets but often people buy them who are not able, or prepared to look after them properly. Pet shops also tend to sell them without making sure they are going to knowledgeable homes. They are lovely, friendly little animals but in my view should have been left alone to live naturally in South America where they belong. As with everything it is only if the public stop supporting the trade by buying them from pet shops that their lives will improve there are many in rescue so please of you feel you would like one go to a centre and adopt a homeless one

Rats Boyo

Boyo – he now has a happy life in a cage right next to Britney and Sonja, I was worried he may get frustrated as he cannot share with them but he seems to be content just to chat to them through the wire and get company. In my opinion no animals should be kept on their own as this is totally unnatural and it is not tolerated that humans are kept in solitary confinement so why should animals have to suffer this injustice?

  Britney & Sonja

Britney & Sonja – (Britney is the yellow one waving at you!) another instance of not thoroughly thinking before acquiring an animal, the usual reason is that ‘my circumstances have changed’ so please think about ‘your circumstances’ BEFORE acquiring ANY animal. Think about their average life span and whether you can commit to the entirety of it not just a few months or even weeks. ALL animals are a responsibility for their whole life just as a child is.

Hoody & Rolph – again another fall – out of ‘a change in circumstances’ THINK and DO NOT buy an animal unless you are ABSOLUTELY SURE that YOU can be care for it and not leave it to someone else

Guinea Pig Lord

Lord - One more case of ‘my circumstances changed’, he was the quietest guinea – pig I had ever come across and seemed so sad in a small cage on his own. He now seems much happier sharing his large cage with the two tiny baby rabbits. Once the babies have grown and funds allow I hope to get them their own shed and run like the other rabbits have.
