All these animals have been bought because I have discovered them in pet shops on their own, in small cages or in poor condition.
Sadly the situation gets worse and worse each year in this country. The large organisations generally now suggest euthanasia in these cases which leaves small struggling sanctuaries to pick up these unwanted animals. I ask for donations because I am financially desperate now and I hate to have to turn animals away if there is nowhere else for them to go.
Unfortunately I have found that I get NO SUPPORT. I also ask for a donation as I feel people should be made aware that the cost for their unwanted animal does not end when they give them up. I have been amazed and saddened however by how little people feel is a reasonable donation.
Not because I am in this for the money but because it demonstrates how little they value their pet. Issaac the rabbit cost me £300 within a week of taking him in as he had to have major surgery and ongoing veterinary treatment. This is not the norm but food even for a small animal over their life span not to mention any other needs run into the £100's. Please if in ANY doubt DO NOT take on ANY animal.
Meet The Small Animals
All of the animals taken in by the Alternative Sanctuary will remain here for life unless specifically put up for adoption on our Adopt An Animal page.
Benny
This is Benny whose owner couldn't keep her any more, she now lives with George and friends and has been very happy to live with company and in a very large area!
Charmane & Terressa
Charmane and Terressa came because they had been brought for the children (not that animals should be viewed as toys!) There had then been a marriage break up and they were surplus to requirements! They were crammed into a tiny cage where they could barely sit up or turn around and it smelt terrible. They now live in a 100 foot square stable.
Fluffy
Fluffy was a stray in an elderly
couple's garden who fed him but were moving and had nowhere for him to
go. At the moment he is not with the other rabbits until he has settled.
George, Jo Jo, Harlequin, Victor & Daisy
George, Jo Jo, Harlequin, Victor and Daisy all came from the same home as their owner was having to move and didn't have anywhere for them any longer. They have now all settled in pretty well and live together in one of the stables.
Martita
Martita came with the other guinea pigs, it is important to remember when buying any animal how long they live and that they need a life time commitment so if you do buy an animal consider how long this will be and for a guinea pig it is around ten years.
Percy
Percy came because his owner had gone to university and her parents felt that it was too difficult to keep him! He is very sweet and settled in straight away with the other rabbits and chickens he lives with.
Rainbow & Rex
Rodin, Romeo, Alfred & Alfonso
Rodin, Romeo, Alfred and Alfonso came from the same home who no longer wanted them, they didn't even have names! They have found their new life a bit strange as they now have masses of room rather than being in cages but they are beginning to settle in.
Rory & Tarqua
Rory came as his owner had gone to university and again her parent felt he was too much for them! He is now very elderly and actually survived the fire as he was trapped inside a building which although the fire raged around him so I couldn't get to him it did not burn. His coat was filthy but he was unharmed!
Tarqua came with Charmane and Terressa for the same reason and was not only in a tiny stinky cage but also all on his own. The owners complained he was vicious and attacked the other two. Actually he is an uncastrated male not a female as they thought. Clearly they took a lot of interest in him! He was very nervous and didn&t look at all well initially. He now lives in a 100 foot square stable with Rory and other animals and I don't think he can believe the space.
